Packing Group – Column 4

The type of danger is always shown by the class number.  The degree of danger is often showing by the packing group number.

  • I – high danger (highest standard of packaging)
  • II – moderate danger
  • III – minor danger (lowest standard of packaging)

Packing groups is how the manufacturer selects the packaging.  The greater the danger the higher standard of packaging.  In each division the packing groups are broken down.

Examples below of a few classes with packing group information:

Some classes don’t have packing groups but are separated by:

  • Class 1 – explosives are separated into compatibility groups
  • Class 2 – gases do not have packing groups
  • Class 6 – infection substance are either category A or B
  • Class 7 – Radioactive have hazard categories I, II, III
