Six Elements of a Label

  1. Product identifier – Name exactly as it appears on the SDS
  2. Signal word – Danger (more serve hazard) or warning (less severe)
  3. Pictograms(s) – one or more pictograms (one for each hazard class)
  4. Hazard statements – Describes nature of the hazard and are based on classification. One hazard statement for each hazard listed. Standardized statement.
    • I.e. “Causes serious eye irritation” or “May cause cancer” Warns the user about the damage that can be done.
  5. Precautionary statements – standardized phrases that recommends safety measures or precautions. Five categories that include: General, Prevention, Response (first aid, emergency etc), Storage, disposal.
    • Can have more than one per label I.e. “Store in a well ventilated” area or “Do not use near flame”
  6. Supplier identification – Name, Address and telephone number
