Responsibilities

Shipper (Consignor):

A shipper prepares shipment for transport and in addition to the responsibilities that all TDG trained individuals shall possess they also are required too:

  1. look up the classification of the dangerous goods, including the shipping name and UN number
  2. select the right container and make sure the shipment is packaged securely
  3. fill out shipping documents
  4. ensure the containers have the correct labels and safety marks
  5. ensure placards for the truck when necessary

Note:  The responsibilities of the shipper could also apply to the person who selects the trucking company, not just the person who fills out the shipping document.  A person or company that imports the dangerous good is also a shipper under the regulation.

Driver (Carrier) shall:

  1. ensure paperwork is present and correct
  2. check the container to see that the labels and marking match the shipping documentation
  3. check that the containers appear to be in good condition
  4. attach placards to the truck if necessary
  5. load and secure the goods

Receiver (Consignee) shall:

  1. understand the hazards on the labels and placards
  2. unload the goods safely
  3. know what to do in case of an emergency such as a spill or leak

Important Information about Responsibilities

An individual can have all the responsivities of a responsibilities of a shipper and handler, as well as a driver. A person can load dangerous goods “in the presence and under the direct supervision of a person who is adequately trained”
